When Tropical Traditions offered me the opportunity to test and review their Gold Label Virgin Coconut Oil, I was really excited to give it a try. I’ve used expeller-pressed coconut oil for years, for both cooking and personal care, but I have never given virgin coconut oil a try before.
I had always heard that virgin coconut oil has more of an actual coconut taste. While I don’t mind the taste of coconut at all, I don’t always want everything to taste like it! But sometimes, it would be nice to add that flavor to certain dishes.
The Test
First, I tried adding some melted virgin coconut oil to my smoothie for breakfast. I also included some coconut milk, egg yolks, berries, a frozen banana, vanilla, and cinnamon. So yummy! I loved the coconut taste and the extra fat helped me feel very satisfied until lunchtime.
The Tropical Traditions website has some great recipes posted and I decided to browse through those to find a dinner recipe which included virgin coconut oil. I ended up making this Chicken Curry recipe which both my hubby and I really enjoyed. The taste of coconut was very subtle in this dish, and paired really well with the curry.
The Verdict
So what’s my verdict? I will definitely keep using the Gold Label Virgin Coconut Oil. It’s perfect for those times when you do want to impart a slight coconut taste to your dishes. I will keep using my expeller-pressed oil, too. And honestly, that will probably get more use than the virgin coconut oil. But I’m really glad I got to try it and when this jar runs out, I’m sure I’ll be wanting to order some more!
